With the help of our generous parent volunteers, we have new compost bins and have extracted and sifted the existing compost for use in our gardens! This compost project will help the children be independent and involved in the cycle of food waste. Our old bins were deteriorating, making composting difficult for the children. Our new bins are solid and have working doors on the front so even primary children can dump their classroom compost! The elementary children worked with parents to remove compost, disassemble the bins, and rebuild the bins.
At Namaste Montessori School, we engage the children in real and meaningful work that contributes to the community. The children are proud of their efforts as part of the compost project. They enjoyed the sensorial experience of working through the compost and preparing it for the gardens. The children learned about the length of time it takes to compost different food products. They also learned the importance of avoiding putting trash in the compost bin! This project supports our greater mission to minimize our environmental impact. Composting keeps food waste out of landfills. The beautiful rich soil will be a great help for the plants they are planting next spring.
