Elementary Students Visit Museum and Concert

Namaste Montessori Elementary Program encourages students to connect what they are learning in the classroom with experiences such as a visit to a museum. On Thursday November 9th a group of students spent the day at Cornell learning about Art and Music.

Inspired by the artistic work of Wassily Kandinsky and Alexander Calder, students created their own work. They used similar materials and techniques in their art classes at school. They studied the biographies of these artists and learned about their creative journey. Did you know that Wassily Kandinsky had synesthesia? Can you imagine what sounds different colors make? What would different paintings sound like? Did you know that Alexander Calder combined his knowledge of engineering with his interest in abstract art to create his sculpture pieces? Visiting Cornell’s Johnson Museum of Art students were able to see these artists’ work at the Johnson Museum of Art.

After a morning exploring the art museum, students ate lunch outside on the quad. They then attended a midday concert of flute and piano during a visit to Lincoln Hall. After the concert they were able to talk with the musicians (Cornell Professors) about the music and instruments used in the performance.

“Going out” is an essential part of the Montessori curriculum. These trips allow students to make connections between their interests and the wider world.
